Traffic was restricted last night and this morning in the Vernon Estates area of Pond Road, and residents of the Vernon Estates neighborhood were evacuated, based on fears of an armed intruder in one of the homes there. But the situation ended up peacefully mid-morning when the house was searched and no one was found inside.

Incident: Report of man with rifle entering residence in Vernon VT
Date: Nov 05, 2017 at approximately 9:30 pm.
Location: Vernon Estates Drive, Vernon
Description: On November 05, 2017 The Windham County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a Vernon residence stating that a man with a rifle had entered a residence on Vernon Estates Drive.
Responding deputies spoke with the complainant who advised he had arrived at the home he shares with his elderly father. According to the complaintant, when he entered the home his father motioned for him to stay out because there was a man with the gun in the house.
The Windham County Sheriffs Office with the assistance of the Vermont State Police secured the perimeter around the home. Residences in the area were evacuated for safety.
The evacuated residents were directed to go to the Vernon Fire Department until the scene was deemed safe.
The Vernon Fire Department assisted by closing Newton Road to traffic and providing assistance to the families that were evacuated. The Brattleboro Police Department also assisted at the scene.
As of this writing, the WCSO and VSP are still on the scene.

Description: The Windham County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Vermont State Police are investigating a report of an armed intruder into a residence on Vernon Estates Dr, Vernon.
Responding law enforcement personnel secured the scene and evacuated nearby residents. A portion of Newton Road, which intersected with Vernon Estates Dr was closed. Based on information developed during the initial investigation, State Police Tactical Services Unit was requested to respond to enter and search the residence. A complete search of the residence was conducted and no person was found. Newton Road has been reopened and the evacuated families have been allowed to return to their residences.
