Possible armed standoff in Vernon ends up as apparent false alarm

Traffic was restricted last night and this morning in the Vernon Estates area of Pond Road, and residents of the Vernon Estates neighborhood were evacuated, based on fears of an armed intruder in one of the homes there. But the situation ended up peacefully mid-morning when the house was searched and no one was found inside.

Here are the two successive bulletins issued by the Windham County Sheriff’s Department:

6:30 a.m.:

Incident: Report of man with rifle entering residence in Vernon VT
Date: Nov 05, 2017 at approximately 9:30 pm.
Location: Vernon Estates Drive, Vernon

Description: On November 05, 2017 The Windham County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a Vernon residence stating that a man with a rifle had entered a residence on Vernon Estates Drive.

Responding deputies spoke with the complainant who advised he had arrived at the home he shares with his elderly father. According to the complaintant, when he entered the home his father motioned for him to stay out because there was a man with the gun in the house. (more…)
