‘Hunt’ing Down History, Part 17

By Barbara Emery Moseley

Although Richard Morris Hunt is remembered for his oversight of the design of the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, as well as for being the architect who designed opulent homes for prominent wealthy patrons, he also was engaged in the design of many public buildings in the Northeast.

In New York City are the Plaza Hotel; the Columbian Presbyterian Hospital; the central entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Stuyvesant apartments on E. 18th Street (known as the “French Flats”); and the New York Tribune Building. Also, St. Mark’s Church, Islip, NY (which was commissioned by William K. Vanderbilt); the Academic Building at West Point; Scroll and Key Clubhouse at Yale; the Fogg Museum at Harvard; the Howland Library in Beacon, NY; the Vanderbilt Tomb on Staten Island; the pedestal of the statue celebrating the Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown; and the Cromwell House, located at Hyde Park, near the Roosevelt House. (Despite his being born in Brattleboro, the only works of Richard Morris Hunt situated locally are two simple stones for his father and brother William Morris Hunt, in the Hunt lot in Prospect Hill Cemetery.) The project is seen not only as adding value to Vernon, but as a template for other towns as they prepare for the 21st century economy. We believe that this project will also provide area jobs in the implementation and servicing of the new network. Please contact Bronna Zlochiver at or 802-579-1567 if you are interested in joining the Fiber Optics Sub-committee.

River and Trails Committee notes

The Vernon River and Trails Committee is making some modest progress and has chosen to focus on the Town Forest and Black Gum Swamp trails as a pilot area for trail mapping and formalization.

While maps and trail markings exist the team feels there is area for improvement to make this special piece of town property user-friendly for all.  Recently, three of the team members embarked on a comprehensive trail confirmation walk to document actual GPS locations of the existing trails.

The team is working to develop enhanced maps and envisions a finished product will include a revised kiosk map, new trail markers and some informational signage at some key areas.  As part of these efforts the team has identified a potential new vista that is within the Town Forest, but well outside any potential 300′ buffer zone which could be imposed around the Black Gum Swamp areas.

At its January 19, 2017, regular meeting, the members of the Vernon Selectboard gave their support to clearing the vista/picnic area. The team hopes to pursue a new trail to and from the vista as well as some vista clearing to improve the views.  The team also identified the existing picnic area vista is overdue for maintenance clearing of trees to restore the view which makes this area such a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch.

The River and Trails Committee meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the Elementary School Library at 6:30 pm.
